«Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose,» wrote Gertrude Stein in 1913. This dialogue between the real and its double, between the word and the thing, resonates particularly today with the current metamorphoses of the living world and its increasingly refined, complex, and fluid representations. Life constantly shows us that, far from being stable, it is instead in permanent transformation. Photography, with its recent digital avatars, gives birth to a reinvented, hallucinatory nature, whose possible transformations unfold infinitely.
 

This mutation of nature and its image is the origin of a machine of evolution that simulates plant growth in interaction with unprecedented but potential environments. In this laboratory of the living, flowers grow in unprecedented forms adapted to changes in our environment. It is a reinvention of life and its representation through new models of plant architectures.
 

Between art and science fiction, the Flora Incognita project draws inspiration from both the aesthetics of Enlightenment-era encyclopedic illustrations and the imagination of recent technological discoveries. A uchrony, a parallel history to Charles Darwin’s theories of evolution, the whole is presented in the form of still images: a series of photographs presented as a futuristic herbarium, and animated with a video installation that depicts each stage of plant growth.
